Santiago de Compostela, 13 October 2025 – The Xunta de Galicia and the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU) have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to strengthen research and innovation in air traffic management (ATM) and contribute to building the Digital European Sky. The partnership aims to accelerate safer, smarter, and more sustainable aviation by linking regional capabilities with EU-level initiatives — a goal aligned with Europe’s broader defence-industrial transformation.

The agreement coincides with Galicia’s Strategic Security, Defence and Aerospace Initiative 2025–2030, which seeks to expand the region’s aerospace sector and promote dual-use technologies. Through this cooperation, SESAR JU and Galicia will align research efforts and explore how the region can serve as a testbed for advanced air traffic solutions, complementing projects under the European ATM Master Plan for sustainable airspace collaboration.

Galicia offers expertise in aeronautical communications, UAV integration into controlled airspace, and flight simulation, supported by a strong industrial and research base. These assets position the region as a valuable partner for demonstrating and validating next-generation air mobility technologies, in line with the integration targets set out in the European Defence Readiness Roadmap 2030.

“This agreement shows how regional innovation ecosystems can contribute to the Digital European Sky,” said Andreas Boschen, Executive Director of SESAR JU. “By joining forces with Galicia, we can deliver safer and more sustainable air mobility for citizens.”

The partnership underscores the growing role of European regions in shaping a unified, digital, and resilient air traffic system — one that links civil and defence innovation into a shared, secure European sky.
